RECORDS OF POLITICAL PARTIES AND RELATED ORGANISATIONS
IN GREATER MANCHESTER

This guide has been produced by the County and District Archivists in Greater Manchester as a brief guide to the location of, and conditions of access to, these collections which can include records, printed material, banners and other items. It is important that the written record of our inheritance should be preserved to enable future generations to understand our present and their past. Individuals and organisations may deposit records in the repositories listed in this leaflet, retaining their ownership of them and restricting access to confidential material by arrangement. Records of all the major political parties have been deposited in the record offices in Greater Manchester but the personal papers of politicians, both local and national, are outside the scope of this leaflet.

The GM Archivists' Group publishes a more general Guide to Repositories, and individual repositories provide leaflets explaining the use of the records in their custody. Users are requested to note that whilst there is a willingness to make archives available for research, access to some records is restricted by the owner and prior permission must be obtained before they can be studied.

It is advisable to give advance notice of a visit to the record offices, preferably by telephone. Enquiries about deposits of material will be welcomed.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF LABOUR HISTORY

Address Archive & Study Centre, 103 Princess Street, Manchester M1 6DD
Web site : http://www.nmlhweb.org/archive.htm

The Archive Centre of the National Museum of Labour History contains the national records of the Labour Party. These include the administrative records of the Labour Party headquarters, the Parliamentary Labour Party minutes, and the European Parliamentary Party.

For local references, the most useful source is the papers of the Labour Representation Committee (ref LRC/). These are the letters written to Lames Ramsay Macdonald, the Secretary of the Labour Representation Committee, which became the Labour Party in 1905. There is correspondence with all the early affiliates, including the trades unions and the trades councils of the Greater Manchester area, for the six years from the foundation of the Labour Representation Committee in February 1900. From 1906 to 1907 there are similar papers from the Labour Party General Correspondence (LPGC), including letters from unions and trades councils.

There are references to local parties in the Labour Party subject files which cover a variety of subjects from fascism to women's suffrage From the 1930s to 1964 there are files on local parties.

It is the policy of the Archive Centre to de-accession local records to the appropriate local repository. However for some items like the minutes of the Independent Labour Party Lancashire Divisional Council 1910-1912, the Centre is unable to do so due to the uncertainty of ownership.
