THE IGI AT GMCRO

The IGI (International Genealogical Index) is an ambitious project undertaken by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints (Mormons). They have compiled an index of millions of names from parish registers throughout the world, available on microfiche. It has been created from a variety of sources including parish registers.

GMCRO has the 1992 edition for England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, The Channel Isles, and The Isle of Man. Although the index is enormous in scope, it should be pointed out that it is by no means complete. There are virtually no deaths indexed, and very few baptisms or marriages after 1875 - most entries cover the period 1500-1875. It is also suggested that the original parish registers should be checked once the IGI has been consulted.

We also have a copy of the British Isles vital records index (1530-1906) which records over 6 million births and christenings in England, 1.3 million in Ireland, 2.5 million in Scotland and 17,000 in Wales.  There are also details of nearly 2 million marriages.

More details can be found at <www.familysearch.org

HOW IT IS ARRANGED

  1. By country
  2. By county
  3. Alphabetically by surname
  4. Alphabetically by given (or Christian) name
  5. Chronologically

In addition, Wales and Monmouthshire are also arranged by given name. These indexes are arranged first alphabetically, then by type of event (births are listed before christenings, which come before marriages), and finally by date.
