Greater Manchester County Record Office
This Guide provides an introduction to the 4 miles of shelving of archives
stored in GMCRO. Without proper finding aids, lists and catalogues these
unique documents are not readily avialable for study. Because each group of
archives is more significant than the individual items within it, a Guide to
the different archival collections is an important tool for users and
archivists alike.
The following pages detail some of the archives in the custody of the
Record Office. The guide is divided into six sections.
- Public Records deposited under Section 4 of the Public Records Act of
1958 and presentations under section 3(6) of the same Act
- Records of Estates are papers concerning important families of Greater
Manchester. Some of the papers go back to the 14th century
- Business records detail the great industrial heritage of the North West
of England
- Groups and societies relate to Trade Unions, charities and organisations
of the area
- Deeds concern collections of legal papers relating to land throughout
Greater Manchester.
- Small Collections of deeds, photographs, plans and Acts of Parliament.
- Other Sources. This section lists the newspapers, maps, and Trade
Directories in our custody.
