GRO Indexes
Following the closure of the Family Records Centre in
London on 15th March, we are delighted to announce that
Greater Manchester County Record Office will be making several important
family history resources available in the North West for the first time.
The Record Office is one of just five centres to offer this new service,
the others being in Birmingham, Bridgend, Plymouth and at the National
Archives in London.

MUNICH 1958
50th Anniversary of the Manchester United Air Tragedy
Historic photographic archive and
original newspaper coverage from February 1958 when the hope of a
footballing generation were ended by the Munich air crash which took the
lives of Matt Busby's Babes
On display in the public searchroom at the Greater Manchester County
Record Office from 6th February.
Manchester Register Office have
released the following statement :
"We have had a large increase in family history applications
following on from programmes like 'Who Do You Think You Are?' and 'You
Don't Know You're Born.'
As a result we are unable to provide a same day service for family
history certificates.
We will accept your applications with a cheque or credit card details
and a daytime telephone number.
We will endeavour to contact you with the results of our research
within 1 week of your application being submitted.

Scouting Centenary
The Record Office has set up a small
online exhibition to publicise records of the Scouting
Movement.
Manchester Burial Index
The burial registers of Southern, Philips Park, and Gorton cemeteries can now be searched on-line at
http://www.burialrecords.manchester.gov.uk
. It's free to search the index of records and once you've found who you are looking for you then have the option to pay a small charge for more information which includes an image of the burial register from which the burial record extract was taken.
The site is under constant development and more records are still to be added, including the records for General Cemetery,
Harpurhey, and Blackley Cemetery

Survey Results
In 2006, GMCRO took part in
the national survey of visitors to archives. 99.1% of all respondents
rated GMCRO's service overall as 'very good' or 'good'. For a full
