LANCASHIRE
The Domesday Book gives no indication of separate county government for the area which was to become Lancashire. For a century and a half after the Norman Conquest successive kings made great grants of lands (often known as the "Honour of Lancaster") between the Mersey and Furness but the grants reverted to the Crown. References to Lancashire as a term appear in official records towards 1200. In 1265 and 1267 King Henry III granted lands in Lancashire and elsewhere to his youngest son, Edmund, who became known as Earl of Lancaster. He and his successors acquired various powers over justice and administration in Lancashire. Grants from 1351 to 1377 created the Duchy of Lancaster and the Palatinate of Lancaster (or powers, associated with the Duchy, over justice and administration in the county). Since 1399 the Duchy has been held by the sovereign. The last palatine court was abolished by the Courts Act of 1971. Among other changes to county boundaries, those of 1974 included the transfer of areas from Lancashire to Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Merseyside and Cumbria.
