REGISTER OFFICES IN GREATER MANCHESTER

At the time of writing, the cost for copies of full certificates from the Register Offices in Greater Manchester and other local offices is £7. For a list of addresses of Register Offices in Greater Manchester see the list at the end of this article.

When requesting certificates, it is necessary to quote the Date (ie the quarter and the year), name and Registration district. The volume and page number on the indexes, which are needed to identify the entry in the full index at the General Register Office, have no significance for the local Register Office. It should be noted that not all register offices have annual indexes of marriages. This is particularly true of those offices serving larger towns and cities. Thus, unless the name of the church in which the marriage took place is known, searchers may find it necessary to request certificates from the General Register Office, as the offices serving large towns and cities usually do not have sufficient staff time to search through several hundred indexes. IN ALL CASES, IT IS ADVISABLE TO CHECK WITH THE APPROPRIATE REGISTER OFFICE BEFORE APPLYING FOR MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES.

Limited searches may be made by the Registrar's staff, subject to staff and time available. General searches must be made in person, and a fee is payable each day the searcher is present in the Registrar's office, in addition to the cost of certificates.

Methods of Payment

Not all Local registrars accept credit card payments and some may make a small surcharge for this service. You are advised to contact the register office concerned before sending in any request for copy certificates. Visa and Mastercard are acceptable as payment to the General Register Office in London and Southport. Please make cheques payable to the local council concerned i.e. Manchester City Council if Manchester , Salford City Council if Salford. All the other areas in the Greater Manchester areas are Metropolitan Boroughs and cheques should be made out accordingly. To complicate matters further , the General Register Office accepts money in US Dollars as they have access to an American bank. No other currency is catered for at present.

Civil registration in Scotland began on 1 January 1855, and all records are held at the General Register Office, New Register House, Edinburgh. Please telephone them on (44) 0131 3340380

3 Ireland

In Ireland, the situation is slightly more complicated. General registration began on 1 January 1864, although Protestant marriages had actually started as early as 1845 for the whole of Ireland.

Records from 1864 to 1922 for the whole of Ireland, and for Eire from 1922 onwards are held by the Registrar General in Dublin while those for Northern Ireland after 1922 are held at the General Register Office, Belfast.  Fees payable are noted on their respective web sites (see below)
