Research Agents

Research Agents IGI Records Register Offices Civil Registration Probate Records

From time to time we are asked to suggest people willing to undertake genealogical or historical research, as most county and district archive services can only commit a limited time to answering individual enquiries. The following list represents those people known by district and county archivists to be working in Greater Manchester. There are all self-employed researchers working for a fee; their inclusion in this list should not be taken to imply that they are employed or approved by us, nor can we guarantee the quality of their work or enter into any negotiations between researchers and clients.

FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETIES IN THE GREATER MANCHESTER AREA

Membership of the appropriate Family History Society may be worth considering as an alternative, or in addition to using a researcher. Please bear in mind that these societies are voluntary groups; they may be able to put you in touch with other members tracing the same family but cannot normally carry out extensive research on your behalf.

Usenet News Groups

Usenet, or Network News, provides access to over 65,000 discussion groups (depending on your provider. Not suprisingly, there are many that discuss genealogy. Below is a list of the more relevant groups. Clicking on one of the links will connect you to your service providers news server and then download the latest messages in that group.
Tip : why not use google.com to search through Usenet rather than downloading all messages in a newsgroup. They have a very large archive of past messages

alt.genealogy Alternative discussion on genealogy

soc.genealogy.britain The main newsgroup dealing with this part of the world

soc.genealogy.ireland Newsgroup relating to Ireland.
