The photograph on the left was taken in
1869 at the junction of Minshull Street and Major Street. The view
is from where the horse and cart is parked on Minshull Street and was probably taken on the
same day. The people in the photograph are gathered at the
premises of J. Eyers, a dyer who also did business on Deansgate and in
Salford. To the left of Eyers is an unidentified tailor and draper. At
the extreme left and right of the block are beer retailers, Peter Clarke
and Charles Thomas who operated from the "Sir Colin Campbell"
and the "Princess Alexandra" respectively. In
addition to ale, porter and tobacco, Clarke also sold milk.
The photograph on the right shows the same corner 133 years later.
The building (Abacus Court) was erected about 10 years ago and is was
initially the Manchester office
of the accountancy firm Coopers Lybrand. |
