ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHIC GALLERIES These galleries form part of the project More Than Meets The Eye, which was made possible by a generous grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The photographs are all taken from the archive of family albums within the Documentary Photographic Archive (DPA). This unique archive forms a diary of visual images, reflecting community, occupation and status. From its earliest years, photography developed as a mass medium, thus enabling working people to afford a family album. These family albums were copied predominantly from the families of working people. The photographs chosen represent some of the more common themes which recur within the archive, such as school life, holidays and celebrations. Other subjects chosen include sport, public houses, and food and drink, as well as a selection dealing with places. Routine daily work is notable by its absence, despite the existence of images of people in the workplace. The photograph was almost invariably reserved for the special occasion. The majority of the photographs were taken by the commercial photographers of the time who had their studios in the local high streets, and whose principal customers were the working classes. As much information as is known about the photographs is
given in the description. For further information about other photographs within
each particular deposit, go to the Access to Archives web-site at www.a2a.org.uk.
An explanation about how to use this site is given there under the section New
A2A Users. The County Archivist would like to thank the trustees of the DPA, Dermot Healy and Audrey Linkman, for depositing this archive at GMCRO, and for all their support for this project. He would also like to thank Audrey Linkman in particular for allowing GMCRO to adapt her writings for use in the text within these galleries.
