is for menu

This one is for Trafford Hall for Easter 1899. Originally menus were used for large dinner parties in Victorian stately homes. Their purpose was to inform guests about what food would be served so that they could pace their consumption! These menus would often be in French and might even be written on porcelain.

is for netball

Annual party for netball teams hosted at Salford Lads' Club in May 1925.

is for off-licence

This shows a wine shop on Bury New Road. The donor was the grandson of a Rumanian immigrant. It is interesting to note that in the nineteenth century the cousin of the off-licence, the public house, was often the venue for the transaction of business by food wholesalers. For example, cheese factors did business in the Sawyers' Arms in Manchester.

is for Pea Saloon

Up to the nineteen century peas were not widely cultivated in the north west of England. Furthermore, when they were grown they were used as fodder for livestock

is for queuing

‘Last dinner in Cologne’. The donor of the collection to which this collection belongs is partially visible on the extreme left. The donor worked as a librarian in a military library in Germany.
