is for menu
This one is for
Trafford Hall for Easter 1899. Originally menus were
used for large dinner parties in Victorian stately
homes. Their purpose was to inform guests about what
food would be served so that they could pace their
consumption! These menus would often be in French and
might even be written on porcelain. |

is for off-licence
This shows a wine
shop on Bury New Road. The donor was the grandson of a
Rumanian immigrant. It is interesting to note that in
the nineteenth century the cousin of the off-licence,
the public house, was often the venue for the
transaction of business by food wholesalers. For
example, cheese factors did business in the Sawyers'
Arms in Manchester. |
