Index Collections Research Interests Interpretation Commissions Deposits

In relation to our collections of donations and deposits the D.P.A. operates like any conventional archive. We accept on deposit material originally assembled by individuals, families, organisations or businesses. Since our interests are focused on the history of photography in general, we are not restricted to records from specific geographical areas. It is only possible here to give a flavour of these collections.

Family Photographs and Albums

As a centre of specialism in the family album the DPA has an extensive range of original cartes de visite, cabinets, postcards, snapshots and family albums of every design from the 1860s

Photographic Societies

bulletLancashire and Cheshire Photographic Union
bulletNorth Manchester Camera Club (mainly lantern slides)
bulletNorthern Photographic Group (documentary records), 1960-1973
bulletHalf Plate Postal Club, Circle 19, 1979-1989

Photographic Businesses

bulletLafayette Studio, Manchester (half plate negatives), 1927-1952
bulletHarry Lonsdale Studio, Ramsbottom, 1930s-1950s
bulletPanora (panoramic photographs of school groups).

The Panora negatives were deposited with the DPA in 1986 by the managing director of the firm who had sold his business but retained the negatives. They date from 29 September 1968 to 30 July 1985. Earlier negatives have not survived. Each negative differs in length but a typical example is 20½ cm wide by 109 cm long.

PANORA NEGATIVES

GMCRO has a collection of approximately 4,500 negatives taken by a company called Panora, which specialised in panoramic photographs of school groups. Photographs were taken of schools throughout the country from 1968 to 1985.

We are pleased to announce that we are now able to have these negatives (some of which are over a metre in length) scanned, and can produce prints on photographic quality paper. As a pilot project, we have scanned the first two boxes of negatives in the archive, which are listed below.

Copies are available from GMCRO for £37, including post and packing. Please make cheques payable to "Greater Manchester County Record Office". Photographs will be sent within 28 days of receipt of orders.
